I love bright and vivid colors and the Spring time in Charleston, SC is one of the best places to see them. Downtown strolls are a feast for the eyes with all colors of the rainbow! There are so many window boxes along the historic streets full of the most beautiful and colorful flower displays your eyes ever looked upon! This made the perfect backdrop for a recent engagement session we were able to shoot...this couple was anything but shy and they had brightest outlook on love. Every one of their photos featured bright smiles, stolen glances, adoring eyes, and just pure love!

I Heart Faces {Best Face in May}

This is a site I follow quite frequently, but never participate much because I usually miss the deadline...go figure :)

Anyways when I read the challenge I thought of this picture of Charles...This just captured all essence of boy to me. Tree climbing, rubber mud boots, camo watch, and serious face. It is very rare Charles lets me photograph him, but when I do they are always goodies that I love to share!

Father's Day Gift Idea

I know with my last post I was thinking about posting a kid friendly lunch recipe, but I decided to go with a craft project instead. With Father's Day coming close I thought this would be a little bit of inspiration for the mom's out there. It is easy, kid friendly, and cheap to do!

When the boys were attending school this year they did an art project that was turned into products to buy...nightlight, mouse pad, notebook, magnet, etc. We were very lucky to have an artistic mom in the group, who I am so lucky to have become friends with, and she came up with this idea. I was so excited she did, because honestly I haven't seen it done before! She's so talented and also creates customizable gifts that are great from any occasion, from baby showers to friends/family birthday gifts...check out Holly's site at Alluring Designs by Holly.

Materials Needed:

Navy and White Acrylic Paint
11 x 14 Canvas (or your choice of size)
Cheap sponge paint brush - this link shows them in a pack of 25, but I know you can buy them individually also. I think they are usually by the check out register at the craft store.
Mod Podge or other Glaze (to seal and finish the canvas)

Paint the entire canvas and sides with the navy, allow to dry and apply a second coat

Once paint has dried paint the forearm white and stamp onto the canvas...we also had a couple of "accidents" with getting the paint where it didn't belong. Just take a we paper towel and blot then go back and touch up with the navy.

Paint the hand, and don't be stingy with the paint really it slather it on, and stamp the hand all the way around the tree trunk until your satisfied.

This is where my pictures end because I had to help with rotating the canvas and reapplying the paint. But for the crescent moon your child can either use their finger to draw the crescent or with Charles and Dawson I had them make a fist and painted their pinkie end. They then just stamped it onto the canvas and I did a little touching up. For the grass at the base of the tree they put paint on their pointer finger and just drew the grass. Once the art has completely dried it will need to be finished with a gloss or a glaze...I've got some Mod Podge that I think I'll use or I remember seeing other glazes right by all of the acrylic paint at the craft store. It just takes a thin layer and it puts a nice finish on the canvas that seals and protects it.

{No Bake Cookies} Charles and Dawson in the Kitchen

My children are constantly asking to help me when I'm in the kitchen and I'm generally too frazzled and in a rush to let them help. I'm sure all you moms and dads can understand, trying to get dinner prepared in a hurry. So, I did some thinking today while the boys were at school and I started feeling really guilty. Here they are asking to help and I'm during down a great learning experience. So I researched some easy kid friendly recipes and decided on the No Bake Cookies from the Kulinary Kidz only because I had the ingredients on hand. I've already been to the grocery store for the week and didn't want to make another trip.

So here is my experience with making these!

Ingredients:

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup cocoa

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup Peanut Butter

1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

3 cups Quick Oats

I pre-measured most of the ingredients before hand, Charles and Dawson are four and trying to pour and measure is usually disastrous, and this made it easier to just dump and stir for them.

Combine the sugar, butter, cocoa, and mile in a large saucepan...

(Charles is popping the bubbles that were created when pouring the milk in, children just can't resist sometimes)

Bring to a boil for two minutes, stir continuously...

Add and combine the peanut butter, vanilla extract, and the oats:

Once combined line a cookie sheet with wax paper and drop the mixture with spoons...the recipe didn't call for this, but I went ahead and put my in the fridge until they were set.

(While Dawson was working on his, he realized he was making the letter P so of course I had to take the picture)

AND ENJOY!

Because I feel it is important for children to take ownership in what they eat, it is my hope to try and do this more often and blog about it to provide other kid friendly recipes. I think the next recipe I try out I will let Charles and Dawson make the decision between the two and try to find a lunch dish they will enjoy.

An Afternoon with the Anderson's {Kiawah Island}

I had the privledge of spending the afternoon with some of my favorite people on Monday. I met Mary at my boys' little preschool 2 years ago. Her daughter Lizzie was in their Mother's Morning Out class. We then became closer friends through the gym, we worked out with in the same group. Mary has been a great friend to me these past two years and I hope she keeps me laughing for many more! Enjoy a peek at her two beautiful children...

Burnsville, NC Trip {The Cornelison Girls Unite}

I am fortunate so have a pretty large family with lots of cousins, both mom and dad's side. The Cornelison cousins all live outside of SC, one in CA, one in NC, a few in VA, and lastly one in NYC. Us girls have started a little tradition of getting together every couple of years at my father's mountain house in the Burnsville/Micaville area...about 45 minutes outside of Asheville. It was also a great age/time for all the second cousins to spend time together and get to know one another. Caeley was the little mommy of the group, Jameson and Dawson were the wild ones, and Charles...well he was the more serious and sometimes silly one. And Charlotte was one of the big girls for the weekend. I always love spending time with these girls and only hope it can be a longer trip next time.

Windy Edisto Afternoon {Abrams Family}

The Abrams contacted me about photographing their first family vacation to Edisto Beach. Four children plus mom and dad made up this clan and it was quite an experience! The children's ages are 8, 6, and 6 month old twin girls. The boys, 8 & 6, enjoyed climbing the rocks, looking for shells, and getting wet...accidentally of course. The girls were content with mom and dad...and thanks to their big brothers I was able to get some cute smiles!

Looking forward to seeing this family again in the fall!

Rothschild Family {Newborn Session}

Dana and I met close to a year ago through some mutual friends and the moment we met I felt like I'd known her for years! She is a petite little spit fire that keeps you laughing every minute you're around her. Sara and I had the pleasure of capturing her family's Hanukkah party in December and we were immediately welcomed with open arms. The same holds true for this past Sunday when we were welcomed into their home to meet the newest addition, Simon. He is a little over 4 weeks and was so calm and alert during most of the session. Simon and his sister were such cuties to capture...

One of Gussy's favorite places to go in her grandparents gorgeous yard is in the backyard and on the swing. While Simon needed some soothing Sara and I took this opportunity to snap some pics of this gorgeous blue eyed girl. I converted a lot of these images to black and white, but REALLY like the color because of her beautiful eyes!

Mom probably won't approve of this picture, but Gussy was screaming to be silly after taking lots of formal pics inside...here is a little of her goofy side, "COOKIE BUG"!

Spiders Have Arrived!

Mid Spring I can always count on the banana spiders to invade my shady areas and the porch. If I want to walk through the yard I usually have to have a stick handy so I can relocate the spiders that have taken residence in our low hanging trees, our walkway, and even on my car. It amazes me the places they are able to spin their webs! They must eat well because through the season they go from being little to HUGE!

A Visit Home {Family Portraits}

A dear friend from high school moved away several years ago to Washington with her husband who is in the Navy. She is fortunate enough to come home about once a year to visit and if I'm lucky her twin makes the trip down from NJ for a few days. On this particular visit I got lucky and was able to spend a couple of mornings with the both of them and little Miss Olivia. The first morning was spent in Summerville at Azalea Park...thank you to Maegan Bell for pointing me in the right direction ...and the second was spent preparing food for Olivia's Baptism Luncheon...well watching Mrs. Causey mostly and enjoying several glasses of wine! I walked away with a few of Mrs. Causey's recipes that I can't WAIT to try ;)

I love these girls (that includes you too Mrs. Causey)...and Chris your not so bad yourself!

A Day at the Beach {Spring Break Adventure}

My two little munchkins are enrolled in a 2 year old program in West Ashley at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Weekday School and they had their Spring Break last week. Charles and Dawson have been dying to wear their bathing suits and get their feet wet in the ocean. So I decided to tackle Edisto Beach and invited along one of their classmates, Allie, with her mom and little sister Emma. It was still a little chilly and pretty windy, but all in all it was a great afternoon and the kids loved it! Charles was the brave one and kept venturing a little bit deeper each time he went in.

They are now infatuated with sharks and after reading several books about them, Charles can't get enough. Every little river or waterway we cross over he asks if big sharks or little sharks are in there. Today we visited a friend for a few minutes and he asked her, "Do you know about Mako Sharks?" He went on to tell her they were the fastest sharks in the ocean and pretty aggressive. I will be bragging about this for awhile ;)

Hopefully this won't keep them from being water lovers!

Finally! A Boy for Jennifer {Newborn}

For a little over a year I have been cheating on my husband...with my gym girls. For awhile, up until I've had a few setbacks that keep me from the hard core workouts, my schedule revolved on getting to the gym to work out with "the girls". A small group of them all met a year ago February in boot camp and I shortly joined them. We are all moms with children at different stages and I tell you they have seriously saved my life a few times. Each one has a different perspective on life, marriage, motherhood (between the 7 of us we have 27 children total), and everything else under the sun, so they are my go to girls for advice!

Jennifer is one of the youngest moms with the most children, 4 girls, one bonus son, and little Chase. Sara and I were so excited to finally meet him and have the pleasure of photographing him. We are so happy Jennifer finally got the little boy she's been waiting for. He has a lot of sporting experiences to look forward to with his mom ;)

I absolutely LOVE this picture of his face. This was taken with a group of shots where he was giving the funniest facial expressions...wonder what caused them, hmmm?

Every time we have a newborn session I always try to incorporate these adorable blocks and it just doesn't EVER work out! I know Chase is screaming, but this is probably the best picture we've gotten with them...

William +4 {Easter Morning}

In a previous post I spoke of my bonus son, William, and I introduced you to his newest brother Wesley. Well on Easter Sunday William's mother and I arranged a portrait date to try and get a picture of William with all of his brothers. It was a crazy morning with 3 toddlers running in different directions and a little infant not being able to fend for himself against the gnats.

I'm hoping this will be an annual event. I love seeing William when all his brother's are together and I am so lucky Lauren and I share the bond we do. Thank you to Lauren and Nick for braving the mid-morning gnats and taking time out of your busy Easter morning to help me make this happen! Looking forward to next year ;)

Spring Has Arrived!

Spring is always a welcomed season! Every Islander looks forward to bringing out their flip flops, cranking their boats up, and throwing on a tank top or bathing suit. Here on Yonges Island you know Spring is in the air when you hear the buzz of bumble bees, smell the wisteria about to bloom, and see buds on the dogwood trees...oh and when your husband is practicing his turkey calls :)

The insects have begun to emerge...

Time to bring out the mason jars to collect caterpillars...I think we have about 7 right now!

We are all too familiar with the pollen in the air...we are reminded of it daily when getting in the car. I have to run my wipers every morning to get the fresh layer of pollen off the windshield...be careful wearing white ladies!

Oh how I look forward to blackberry picking! I drive past this field full of blooms promising me blackberries in a couple of weeks...

The azaleas were a little late blooming this year, but it was well worth the wait! If you haven't been to Azalea Park yet, you need to make the trip! It is in full bloom and beautiful!

Ava Jane's Birthday Celebration

My boys and I had the pleasure of celebrating Ava's 1st birthday a few Saturday's ago. And who can resist a 1st Birthday celebration? It's such a milestone for parents and baby! I took this opportunity to practice my indoor photography and using my hot shoe flash. I was pretty happy with the end result.

Meggan is quite the crafty one. The theme for Ava's party was pinwheels and here is the little take home treat bags.

Spring Has Sprung ;)

What a morning we had with 4 children, a rabbit, 2 ducklings, and swarms of gnats! Luckily the rabbit enjoyed playing dead and the ducks were still small enough to keep in their little box once we were done with them.
I have never seen a rabbit so laid back and easy going before. At one point Emma, the youngest of the 4, was chewing on the rabbit's foot, picking the rabbit upside down, and grabbing fistfuls of hair. The rabbit never even flinched!

And now for the boys...

Usually the pictures I get of Charles his eyes close during that 1/25oth of a second and I get a shot of him with his eyes half open or completely closed. Every once in a while I can get a good shot, and I've learned to use the rapid fire setting so I can take multiple shots. Here I wasn't so lucky...this was intentional and Charles' strong willed personality shines through.

Meggett Boys {Spring Session}

These boys keep their momma on her toes, especially Little Henry! I think the only time I saw him walk was when we were on the dock, other than that it was full speed ahead. To be young again and have that energy, SIGH...

It's always a pleasure to document locals in my area. We are such a small community and I often daydream what the future is going to be like for all these little ones out here. Haven't tallied it, but it seems like Meggett is dominated by boys and I just keep envisioning lots of mischievousness going on, especially once they hit their teens. Think I might invest in some bars for our windows since they are so close to the ground, or maybe some cactus plants.

Anyways, Preston and Henry were such cuties! And although Henry was on the go, we really captured some shots of his true personality.

Ashleigh, you're doing an amazing job with these boys!

These next few pictures showcase Little Henry's personality. And Preston was so patient and helpful throughout the whole session!
This is one of my favorites from the whole session, Henry on the go and Preston being the sweet boy he is :) Can we say Magazine Cover?

And lastly...little boy feet. When I showed this to a family member she said, "You and your obsession with little one's feet!"...what can I say? I love this shot also, the texture of the brick, little kid sneakers, and jeans...perfection, essence of boys ;)

Master Wesley Hennet {newborn}

Little boys just have a special place in my heart, I guess because I am constantly surrounded by them! They are so full of curiosity, love the dirt, camouflage (well if you live out where I do), and get so excited when it rains because they know that means lots of puddles...and if they're lucky mud puddles! Wesley has all of this to look forward to and I know his big brothers will be right there holding his hands guiding him.

Wesley is the newest addition to my bonus son's family. William is now the oldest brother to 4 little brothers, that's right 4. I don't think he considers himself lucky yet, but I KNOW his little brothers do and one day William will to.Congratulations to Nick, Lauren, William, and Wade :)

The Parker Family

I have lots of catching up to do with both past photo shoots and some recent photo sessions! Keep checking in with us :)

Sara and I met this lovely family a few weeks ago and I'm proud to say it was our first client who heard about us through word of mouth! She contacted us to mosty take some pictures of their son, but we couldn't resist the opportunity to take pictures of his sister and the whole family. This did make me pretty nervous in the beginning though walking in blind and not knowing the children, but it was a challenge I was ready for.

Little H was 15 months old and I'd forgotten how curious a 15 month old is and how ACTIVE! They do not like sitting still, brings back memories...happy ones of course ;) I think this is why I enjoy photographing children, you truly forget the challenges, milestones, and changes they go through.

From the afternoon session, this has to be my favorite. I think all mothers will understand...unfortunately we will have to let go of our little one eventually, but hold on as long as possible.

OK, this just melts my heart. Sara captured this moment...I love the bond between a father and daughter!

Shannon's Expecting {maternity}

What would we all do without facbook? Honestly? I love that I can stay in contact with old high school friends by just logging onto a website! Plus it makes me feel like I'm still close to home...oh how I miss James Island. So a couple of months ago I was contacted by a friend I went to high school with about taking pics of a preggers friend, who I also went to high school with. Shannon made the trek out to my neck of the woods, Meggett...which is about a 45-60 minute ride from James Island depending on the weather and traffic. I had so many exciting ideas planned and locations I wanted to use out here. Unfortunately, all of those were nixed with the rain and we were stuck inside for most of the time. Luckily we caught a little bit of a break towards the end and we rushed outside to my back yard for a different scenery. Will hopefully get some pictures of Baby Smart when he makes his debut! Look for some more to follow from Sara's view :)

Reese & McKenna

What a beautiful family Sara and I had the opportunity to photograph! Our plan was to dedicate an hour to the family, but once we got there and started to snap the pics we couldn't stop! With my children and Sara's children in school we spent the whole morning with this family. What a treat and breath of fresh air it was!

I've had such a hard time trying to decide which pictures to post and have not been able to narrow it down. So enjoy :)

I think this was the only time I saw Reese's eyes pop open for more than a few seconds!

This is my last batch of pictures I've been working on from the holidays. Baby H had just turned 2 months old and he was such a strong little fella...already rolling over and getting his chest off the floor. Big sister was so proud and a HUGE help to me! Thank you to the Payne family :)

Over the Christmas Holidays there was a HUGE family Christmas party at my father's house. I knew baby L was going to be there and I HAD to use this precious little one for more practice.

For some reason I LOVE this picture. This is L's mommy and grandmother getting her dressed ;) She sucked down her dinner bottle soon after!

The Butler Family

During the break Sara and I had the honor of visiting the Butler family on Wadmalaw for a maternity session and then down to Cherry Point for a mini-birthday session. Kudos to the fam for braving the cold!

Our First Newborn Session

...and it was a success! Thanks mostly to Sara and her awesomeness we had a great session this morning with baby Isabelle. The time went by quick and honestly I don't know how we would have finished it and gotten the shots we did if we both weren't there, it was SO nerve wracking! Looking forward to our next newborn shoot hopefully within the next week :) There are so many other beautiful pics we got and hopefully we will have more of a variety on the website (Coastal Tides Photography) shortly. Let me first start off by saying welcome to our blog! My name is Emily and my friend/business partner/gym buddy is Sara and we have come together to start Coastal Tides Photography. We are stay at home moms who have fallen in love with the camera and decided to turn this hobby into a small business! So hopefully look forward to more posts from the two of us!

So the first few pictures I'm going to post is a session we had with one of Sara's friends. Her name is Angie and she is about 7 months pregnant, the third boy for her and her husband. They have not decided on a definite name, but have it narrowed down to a few. Sara and I like Sullivan the most so that's the picture I decided to post. When we were setting the blocks, Angie's belly did a little roll and it was so amazing to witness! She was beautiful and it almost made me wish I was pregnant again ;)
